Hello Term 2!!

Welcome back to school!! Room 5 has had a few changes! Today we greeted 4 brand new faces - Levi, Navaya,Hendrix and Aaron all had their first day of school.

Due to the increase of students in Room 5 last term, some of our students moved into the new Room 6 with Mrs Trebes - I checked in with them and they all had a great day .

To strengthen our home / school partnership I have introduced Room 5 to Seesaw. Seesaw is an app that links students school life with home. Seesaw is a way to "include families in the learning process by inviting them to view updates to their child's Seesaw journal."

Students are in charge of the posts that are put on Seesaw, which then come to me for approval. Parents only have access to their child's journal, via the QR code that has been sent home. Please feel free to add comments on your child's posts as this will encourage the use of the app.It would be great to have all parents on board with this.

Finally, just a few reminders for the term.

  • Our first bell goes at 8.55am , all students must be at school by this time, if you arrive after this bell please report to the office to let them know your child is here but late.
  •  Book bags & notebooks need to come to school everyday. This is an essential communication tool and contains homework and notices.
  • Uniform - Please ensure all clothing is named, and when the weather gets wet , a spare set of clothes is a great idea.
  • Class blog - It would be awesome to have comments left on our blog so we can see who is reading our posts - feel free to share it with family and friends.

Room 5 had a great start to the term, despite the rushed start with the fire drill! Many thanks to those parents who brought their children to the field. It was unusual to have this happen before school starts! If you are at school and hear a continuous bell , everyone is to make their way to the field as quickly and calmly as possible. We discussed this in Room 5 and will have another talk tomorrow to make sure students remember what to do in this situation.

Have a great week!!

School Kit Writing Swap #2

Guess what?! Room 5 got mail! Today our package from Kumeroa Hopeland school arrived! The students in Room 5 were so excited to see what was in the package!!
We received some awesome maps that the students in the Kea class had drawn for us, it was great because we could see how their classroom is set up and how it is different to ours.
We also received the poster that was filled in and had all kind of interesting facts on it too. Room 5 especially liked the writing that the students had done on the back of the postcards! Here are some photos of Room 5 with their package!

School Kit Writing Swap

Room 5 has been lucky enough to take part in a writing swap through School Kit . We were sent an amazing package full of goodies. One of the tasks was to fill out a cool poster with bits and pieces about us and our cool school. Some of the tasks were a little tricky for the Room 5 students, so we adapted them. The courier has picked up our package and set it to Kumeroa - Hopelands School in Palmerston North, in return we will get a package with the poster cards all filled out with amazing writing and the poster sheet filled with information about them.
Check out next week's blog to see what we receive in the mail!!

Here are some photos of the completed work we sent  (Miss Williams forgot to get photos of our postcards - woops)

Time with Mr Byers

Last week Mr Byers came for one of his visits to Room 5 & 6. During this time both classes listened to Mr Byers read a story about a polar bear. The story lead to lots of great discussions around polar bears , where they live and other cool facts that Mr Byers shared.
After the story  Mr Byers played a pattern/rhythm game with both classes. Mr Byers would show the children a clapping pattern and then they had to copy it. This is an interesting game to play to see if students can pick up the pattern and repeat.
Thanks for visiting us Mr Byers, we look forward to seeing you next week.

Ice Skating at Stanley Ave!

How lucky were we! This week we were able to go ice skating! The rink has been set up in the rec centre.  At the start we had a safety talk about what to do on the ice. We had to wear gloves to keep our fingers safe, and a helmet to protect our head. When we were on the pretend ice, the instructor showed us how to get up. You have to go on your knees first , then try to stand up.
Here are a few photos from our experience - it was a lot of fun !

Our swan plants!

Last week we got back in to our garden plot. First we had to weed out the old plants that were dead. Miss Williams had brought in some swan plants from her house and we each took turns at planting one or two plants. Some are big, some are small. One plant even has a seed pod on it with fluffy seeds inside. Kelly helped us to plant some of the seeds and we will see if we can grow some plants from scratch.

Today we looked at the cycle of a Monarch butterfly. We listened to a cool song about the butterfly and the stages it goes through, and then we started colouring in a picture of the different stages. Our new word we have learnt is chrysalis - which is where the caterpillar changes into a butterfly.

Keep an eye on our blog for more updates ! Hopefully we will have some caterpillars on our plants soon!
