Room 5 is a bustling and busy classroom of 5 year olds. We are always challenging ourselves, trying new things and learning about how school works. This blog is a way to keep whanau and friends updated on what is happening in and around our school lives. Please leave a comment so we know you have visited!

Hand ,eye co-ordination while learning shapes
Room 5 and 6 have introduced a new activity into their daily learning. We are now learning more about our shapes , while we hammer them into a board.
This is good for students as they need to concentrate on holding the nail and keeping their eye on what they are doing.

Room 5s Butterfly Cycle
Check out our new friend! We were lucky enough to have Charlie bring in a swan plant branch which had a beautiful caterpillar on it! The change has happened so fast, we were lucky to catch each precious stage on camera!
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at butterflies ,their cycle , what we can do to help them etc. We are very exited as you can see, one has already hatched and Room 5 set it free on Tuesday with the help of Mrs Corrigan!
Stay tuned!

Tuakana Teina
Today all the students took part in Tuakana Teina session. This meant that all the older students went to the younger classes and spent some time with them. Tuakana Teina is the concept of the Tuakana ,older students, helping, supporting and teaching the younger students - Teina.
Room 5 had students from Room 13 come and visit us. We talked about who was in our family, what we liked to do and then the Room 13 students shared some of their writing. This time also gave the Room 5 students a chance to share their reading skills and interact with students who they see around the school but might not normally interact with.
It was awesome to see the interactions between the students and hear after how much they enjoyed their time. This was so much fun that we will be looking to implement something more permanently into our weekly routine with Room 13.
Later on in the term we will be doing another school wide Tuakana Teina session, where we are hoping to get outside - if the weather plays the game! Stay tuned for dates and times!

Kiwi Swim Safety session
On Monday we were lucky enough to have Wendy from Kiwi Swim Safe come to Stanley Avenue and work with each class.
Wendy showed Rooms 5 & 6 some great songs with actions to get them used to the water and to show students it was ok to put our heads under.
Some of the songs were "The Wheels on the bus, This is the way we wash our face and Ring a Rosie".
Here is a short clip of Wendy working with our swimmers.

Fabulous February Foyer Display!!
Check out our amazing group of artists and their first piece of artwork! This term we are focusing on what makes us unique and powerful. We know that each of us is different, and that's ok - it is what makes us who we are!
Students in Room 5 with guidance from Mrs Prattley, coloured and decorated this amazing underwater scene. Each student was in charge of decorating their fish and making sure they tried their best to present a quality piece of work that reflected who they are.
If you haven't seen this, pop in to the office and have a look - it's worth the trip!
A special thanks from me (Miss Williams) to Mrs Prattley and Kathy for their amazing work with the students of Room 5 and helping the plan come together while I was away.

Hello Term 1!
Welcome back Room 5!
We have already had such a busy two weeks! We have started reading and are excited to be taking books home and sharing them with our whanau, and we are all swimming everyday!
Last week we worked on our foyer display item where we all got to help decorate and colour the letters and our very own fish. When you have a moment ,pop in to the office and check out our work.
We have 11 smiley faces in Room 5 and I am happy to report that they are all settling in and working together well.
Today we created our class treaty and talked about rules that we think we need in Room 5. Stay tuned to see the display we will have up in Room 5.
Have a great week!
