One last post for those of you that follow our blog!
At the end of term we had our final assembly where we acknowledge those students who have demonstrated and lived the Stanley Avenue Learner Dimensions , and those who have achieved academic success.
The recipients this year from Room 5 : Sharon, Xavier and Seb. Each one of these students turns up to school organised and ready to learn, gives it their all and supports their classroom members. I have been very proud of things they have achieved and wish them all the best for next year.
Some Room 5 students will be moving on to Room 6 next year, these students have been notified, had a visit with Mrs Trebes and also have the 2018 stationery list sent home. If you have misplaced the stationery list, it can be found on our website.
Enjoy the holidays with your whanāu, stay safe and we will see you in the new year!
Room 5 is a bustling and busy classroom of 5 year olds. We are always challenging ourselves, trying new things and learning about how school works. This blog is a way to keep whanau and friends updated on what is happening in and around our school lives. Please leave a comment so we know you have visited!

Hands on learning.
In Room 5 I try to mix up our learning activities to keep students engaged and enthusiastic about school and learning. This week , as you would have seen from the newsletter , we dressed up, blew bubbles, created in the sandpit and drew on the concrete.
Trying to blow bubbles with items from the classroom was a big hit, and it made for some great story writing.
Here is a short clip of everyone in action - including a couple of big kids we had for the day from Room 9.

How we learn our ABC.
Today during reading time students in Room 5 work on 'tumble' activities. These are individual activities that students can work on ,mostly, by themselves.
Today it was such a nice day outside, we decided to try having an activity out of the room. We got out the chalk and were practising how to write our letters and names out on the concrete.

Brandon & Sharons' snail
This week while I was on duty I came across Brandon and Sharon. They had found a little snail in the garden. It was great to see them exploring how he moved, and what would happen when the snail came across a gap in the table. There were great conversations being had between all of the children who came over to discuss the snail, like how does he move, where is his home and what does he eat. A great example of how not all learning happens in the classroom!

Reminders for Term 4
Hi all, last day of term today so just a few notices before we go into holiday mode.
- First day back is the 16th of October - Please note , there is an early finish at 1pm for Professional Development.
- Photo orders close on the 18th October.
- School hats are compulsory in Term 4 - these can be purchased from the school office.
I have also sent home a letter today about our Little Garden project. Each student will receive a Little Garden pot to plant and grow over the holidays. It would be nice if they could look after it themselves to learn about what a plant needs as we will be looking at this in term 4. If you like you can also email in pictures of your plants growing over the holidays - or get children to draw a picture of the seedling once it sprouts. My email is Hayley.Williams@Stanleyave.school.nz.
Enjoy the holidays , have fun and stay safe.

Great progress Room 5!
These hardworking students have all moved on to a new word list! This list is the one at the back of notebooks. It corresponds with the books students are reading. Students are asked to learn these each week , just for sight recognition, not spelling. Advancing with these lists helps further their reading progress.
Ka Pai guys! Great work!

Super independent writers!!
A big congratulations Maddie and Charlotte who created some amazing writing, all by themselves!! They have started sounding out words and writing the letter sounds they can hear. This means, for Maddie, she was trying to write the word 'jump'. When she says the word, she knows what letter sounds are at the start and end of the word, so she wrote a 'j' and a 'p'. This shows me that both Maddie and Charlotte are making connections between sounds they can hear, and being able to record the correct letter.
Keep up the great work girls!!

Busy bees in Room 5.
Each day when I am working with groups for Reading , Writing, Maths or Handwriting, the Room 5 students are working on what we call a tumble. A tumble is a group of themed activities that relate to the curriculum area they are working on. For example if we are working on Reading, there will be letter and word activities. These can be anything from Bingo, to writing on the whiteboard table or Study ladder.
This week I worked alongside groups to see what they liked about each activity that I had set up, showed them some new things and also had them show me some new things - they are all so creative!! I had great fun lying under the table on the ipads with one group, creating things with the Mobilo and watching them problem solve with puzzles.
Here is a little clip put together of the photos I took.

This fabulous group of students all received new word lists this week! Each students was allowed to choose a prize and received a little chocolate.
All of the Room 5 students have been trying really hard this week on lists, so even though they didn't receive a prize , they should still be very proud of their efforts.

Room 5's Winter writing!!
Last week Room 5 focussed on writing about Winter. We talked about what we could see, hear, touch, smell and taste when it was winter. The students came up with some great ideas , which we recorded on the board.
Each writing group then chose which sentences they liked, or created a new one , and filled out their Winter writing sheet.
After this we worked on some artwork to accompany our poems. These are now all up at the back of Room 5, so if you missed seeing your child's poem that went home in Week 1, pop in and check out the display !
Great work Room 5!
This week we also welcomed Dylan, Kauri, Riley and Nevada into our class, we are going to try and update our blog photo next week to show you all of the lovely smiley faces.

What can Room 5 do?
This week our first writing lesson was focussed on a poem called "I Can". As a class we discussed things that we can do - ride a bike, skip, hop and much more. The children were then asked to draw 2 pictures of things they can do. Our next step was to write a sentence to go with our drawing starting with "I can.......". We are all different and at varying stages of learning about writing so some of the children write over the top of my writing, some copy underneath and others are learning to use their word and letter cards to create their own sentence. It was great to see all students trying really hard and focusing on giving it their best.
The pictures and writing are on display in Room 5 so feel free to pop in and see our work! Here is just a sample of some of the writing.

Balloons visit Room 5!
On Sunday Stanley Avenue was lucky enough to have the Waikato Hot Air Balloon visit. They started very early, at 7, because that is the best time for balloons to set up - when there isn't much wind.
It was great to see students coming to see the big balloons - some of us were even lucky enough to have a ride!!!
A big thanks to the Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club for coming to our school and giving us the opportunity to see the awesome balloons.

Did you know about our school app?
Stanley Avenue is lucky enough to have their very own school app! Even better is that it is free to download! You can choose to get app notifications for your child's class or school wide - or both! You can also use the app to send in absentee information, get contact information and check notices.

Room 5's super heros!
We had another busy week this week and it was mostly centred around our writing . This week we made super hero capes and masks and then wrote about what our super power would be if we had one.
We also performed at assembly in our cool super hero gear. Here is a photo of us all dressed up and a few of our stories we wrote.
"My super power is lava. I am going to put it on the trees." By Ruby
"My super power is electric. I am going to electric other people." By Olivia
"My super power is to make ice. Then I can build a castle." By Navaya
"My super power is camouflage so I can sneak up on bad guys". By Luscous
" My super power is fire. I am going to light it." By Tamahou
